10 Dental Hygienist Tips for Healthy Teeth!

Aug. 31, 2026

Recommended by our clinic’s dental hygienist Dita Skrastiņa.

  1. Choose a soft toothbrush (soft, super soft, or ultra soft).
  2. Use a toothpaste containing 1,000 – 1,500 ppm fluoride (this information is usually indicated on the tube).
  3. Apply toothpaste to a dry toothbrush.
  4. Hold the toothbrush at an angle towards the gums (approximately 45 degrees).
  5. Brush your teeth twice a day – in the morning after breakfast and in the evening before going to bed.
  6. Brush your teeth for approximately 2 minutes. For each tooth, make 10 small horizontal back-and-forth movements.
  7. Floss once a day, in the evening before brushing your teeth.
  8. After brushing, spit out the toothpaste but do not rinse your mouth with water.
  9. Replace your toothbrush regularly – every 3 months or sooner if the bristles become worn or frayed, or after an infectious illness.
  10. Visit a dental hygienist every 6 months.
